UCN Trunk Cable One of two coaxial cables, designated A or B, that provides the transmission media for the UCN. The trunk cable consists of segments connected together by UCN taps.
UCN Cable A One of a redundant pair of UCN coaxial trunk cables that are diversely routed to reduce the possibility of simultaneous damage to the A and B cables.
UCN Cable B One of a redundant pair of UCN coaxial trunk cables that are diversely routed to reduce the possibility of simultaneous damage to the A and B cables.
Drop Cable The coaxial cable that connects the network device to the UCN trunk cable (UCN Cable A or UCN Cable B) by means of the trunk cable tap.
Trunk cable tap The component that adapts the Network Device to the UCN trunk cable by means of a drop cable while maintaining the impedance of the trunk cable. Three types of UCN taps provide connections for two, four, or eight drop cables. Tap Port An F-type connector on the trunk cable tap that provides a connection for either a trunk cable or a drop cable.
What do UCN taps do? The UCN taps contain UCN signal transformers and impedance matching networks. These components allow the drop cables to interface to the trunk cable and also isolate the operating trunk from faults on the drop cables, such as shorts.
4-and 8-Drop UCN taps More equipment drops in the same area are accomplished by using these larger cable taps. The 4-drop trunk cable tap accommodates four drop cables and the 8-drop trunk cable tap accommodates eight drop cables. How are UCN taps supplied? UCN taps are shipped as pairs in kits that contain two 2-drop UCN taps with four 75Ω terminators, two 4-drop UCN taps with eight 75Ω terminators, or two 8-drop UCN taps with sixteen 75Ω terminators. Each kit also includes mounting brackets that can be used to install the taps in a cabinet or elsewhere.
